Artificial intelligence and patents: Government response to call for views
Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to play an increasing role in technological development. There are many questions relating to intellectual property (IP) that arise from AI-related innovation. The UK government has indicated that it wants the UK to be at the forefront of the AI revolution, and wants to create the best environment to allow AI innovation to thrive.
Last year, the UK government published a call for views on various topics related to AI and IP. The government has now published its response, and below we summarise the response on the patent-related topics included in the call for views. (more…)
Brexit: Patent, trade mark, design and GI “No Deal” notices published by UK Gov
It’s probably fair to say that the Prime Minister’s meeting in Salzburg last week did not go as well as the government would have hoped. Talk has now turned to the negotiations being at an impasse and the possibility of a No-Deal Brexit becoming reality seem to have increased.
Given that we’re now all staring out over the cliff edge again it seems a fitting time to take a quick look at the UK Government’s advice notices, that were published yesterday, in respect of patents, trade marks, designs and geographical indications in the event of a No-Deal Brexit. (more…)
Patent Box 2.0 – changes afoot for the UK’s Patent Box Regime
Back in January David Cameron gave his EU speech and said the following: “I want the European Union to be a success and I want a relationship between Britain and the EU that keeps us in it……When we have negotiated that new settlement, we will give the British people a referendum with a very simple in-or-out choice. To stay in the EU on these new terms; or come out altogether.“
Quite what that new settlement will be and how effective DC’s negotiating skills will be is something of a slight unknown. However, if last week’s joint announcement that George “I’ve secured us a discount” Osborne made with Germany on the subject of the Patent Box is anything to go by then the EU negotiation may prove interesting!
