UKIPOlogoThe UKIPO has opened consultation on a new accelerated prosecution service dubbed “superfast”. The intention appears to be to offer this premium service in addition to free acceleration services currently available, which can already bring the time taken to obtain a UK patent to less than a year.

The proposed superfast service is expected to cost around £3500 to £4000 in official fees and will shorten the patent processing time to as little as 90 days. Unlike the existing services, no supporting reasons for requesting acceleration are needed.

Publication and grant of an application will be separated by a minimum of one month in order to allow third parties to file patentability observations.

Consultation is open until 12 June 2013, further details can be found here.

[ipcopymark – as noted in an earlier post it is possible to get a UK patent from filing through to grant in around 7 months under the current arrangements. I wonder who wants to stump up as much as £4000 to shave 4 months of that time?]
